Closure
Noah leaving Oakdale shouldn't have been unexpected. Luke had witnessed how broken Noah was. They both were. It was impossible not to be. In the back of his mind, he knew that it couldn't continue. They couldn't continue that way.
They tried to be just friends. He didn't want to risk losing Noah. It wasn't something he could survive. So, they tried.
But it was like they were drawn to each other, like magnets. No matter how hard they worked at it, they'd end up fucking. Against the sink in Java's bathroom, on Luke's desk at Worldwide, in the back alley at Yo's....hard, fast, demanding. It left him feeling hollow because he wanted...more.
But he couldn't.
In the end, it nearly destroyed Noah.
So he'd kissed Luke goodbye, told him to be happy and took off to L.A to start a life that wouldn't kill a part of him every day.
Luke understood that. He wanted Noah to find peace. He didn't want to be the reason he tore himself apart inside.
So, he watched him go.
And he missed him every day.
It was a constant ache that he didn't know how to make better. All he wanted was to find Noah, hide in his arms, tell him the things he hadn't when he should have.
But he couldn't.
Luke walked around Oakdale for weeks without much direction. Sitting at Al's for hours with a blank notebook in front of him, ordering cup after cup of coffee (he couldn't go into Java without his chest constricting so he stayed away). He visited the lake almost every day, staring into the water, looking for answers to questions he wasn't even sure about. He ate dinner at the farm or his mother's, never acknowledging the looks of concern his family gave him.
He didn't take any of Noah's calls until they stopped coming altogether.
After four months of nothing, of just waking up and walking through what was left of his life, he knew something had to change. He spoke to his Grandmother, giving her proxy for any decisions they needed to make for his foundation. She gave him a strange look but when he asked her to do it for him, she agreed.
Faith turned eighteen and Luke gave her his car. She only stared at him, the keys in her hand, frown marring her face. Luke kissed her cheek and walked away.
He started packing away books and clothes, things that reminded him of Reid, cleaning out the apartment he'd never really lived in. Subletting it to Tony seemed like the best solution so he did. He wanted to get rid of everything that held him down.
And it took him by surprise when he realized why.
When he had, he packed up a suitcase, his laptop, the watch Noah had given him and moved into the Lakeview. He called his father and mother, told them he loved them, and made the last of his arrangements before he went to bed.
That was where Casey found him, knocking on his door at one in the morning and when Luke opened, he'd burst into the room, eyes wide.
“Don't do this, Luke.”
Luke raised an eyebrow, rubbed sleep from his eyes and turned to look at his friend.
“Don't sleep?”
“I know it's been hard for you. Reid dying and Noah leaving but you can't...” Casey grabbed at Luke's shoulders
Luke blinked, waiting for whatever Casey was saying to be clearer.
“Look, man. You have us, okay? We all love you. Don't...don't give up.”
It took Luke a moment to understand what Casey meant and when he did, he started to laugh, holding one hand to his stomach.
Casey looked pissed, crossing his arms and scowling. “This isn't funny.”
Luke bent at the waist to try to control himself and when he finally had, moved around his friend, reaching for the papers on the night stand. He handed them to Casey, watched his face as he read, the shock, and then laughed when his friend grabbed him in a hug.
“I didn't think you knew.”
Luke rolled his eyes, pulled away and smiled. “Of course, I knew. It just takes me longer than most to get some things.”
Casey nodded. “Have you told him?”
Luke shook his head, glanced down at the ticket to Los Angeles in his hand. He didn't know what he would find when he got to Noah. He hoped it wouldn't be too late. That when he got there, he could convince Noah that this was different. That he wanted him. Luke had tried to let Noah go. Tried for too many months and in too many ways to stop loving him, to forget the life he wanted.
But he couldn't.
