Notes Set quite a few years in the "Gus Universe". No real need to read the Gusverse stories unless you want to. Nothing too spoilery about it. This takes a few years leap in the future to glance at JR and Gus' lives.
Enjoy!

Gus glanced up, the sound of the front door slamming startling him out of his thoughts. Seconds later he heard the distinct clump of steel-toed shoes on the shiny, recently buffed, hardwood floors. He bit back a smile, calling out as he did. “If you put one scuff mark on the floor, JR, Dad is going to make your life fucking miserable.”
There was a beat and then, “Yeah, right. That man fucking loves me.”
Gus snorted. “Keep dreaming, little girl.” She appeared in the doorway, less than a second later, in all her punk girl glory. Gus’ mouth dropped open at the sight of JR. “Jenny Rebecca, what the hell did you do?”
Her hand went up to the bright purple stripped hair crowning her head. “What? It’s my favorite color.” She shimmed her acid-washed denim skirt a little further down her hips, displaying a rather impressive belly ring and…
“Is that a tattoo?!”
Gus rose out of his chair, moving closer to make sure he wasn’t seeing things. He raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms. “Jesus Christ, JR! Are you trying to give them heart attacks?”
JR rolled her eyes. “Look, Perfecto Boy. I didn’t do this for them. It’s for me.” She patted his shoulder and started for the kitchen. “I’m starving. You got anything to eat in this mansion?”
Gus sighed, following closely behind. If he fed her, he might be able to get out of her why she was at the house at this time of day. He paused for a moment at that thought.
“JR, how did you get here?”
“I drove.”
“You don’t have a license!”
“I have a permit!”
Gus stood in the middle entry way, eyes wide and mouth unable to form proper words. “Does anyone know you’re here?“
JR waved a hand at him. “I think I yelled it at them when I went out the door. I don’t remember.”
There was a racket from outside, some muffled voices and then three bodies burst through the door , two in mid-argument, before Gus could respond.
“I never once said that, Justin.”
“Please, Brian. I think I remember what you said.”
“No, I think you like to think you remember what I say.”
“Oh, JR! Your hair is so pretty!” Al’s voice rose over the other two and all three newly arrived persons stared, their faces ranging from concern to amusement to admiration.
Gus turned to his other little sister, who wasn’t so little anymore and pointed his finger. “You are not - I repeat - not to do anything like that to your hair.”
Al smirked at him, her eyes crinkling with amusement and wisdom way beyond her eleven years. “I wasn’t planning on it, dude. Just making a remark.”
Gus glanced behind her at the Dads and motioned to the kitchen. “We were going to get a snack.” He watched Justin face register panic. JR wasn’t exactly good in the kitchen. She’d almost burned down her own a few times.
“Oh, I can do that. Why don’t you and JR go…um…” Justin glanced at Brian then back at them. “Um…”
“Somewhere else other than your precious kitchen?” JR laughed a little.
Brian smirked at Justin. “Subtle, Sunshine.” He hooked a hand around his partner’s neck and pausing only for a second, nodded at JR. “Not bad, kiddo. Did Michael have a fucking meltdown?”
JR harrumphed in response. “That is an understatement. He demanded I change it back.” The disbelief in her voice was comical and Gus bit back a laugh. She sounded and looked just like Michael when her voice rose like that.
Brian patted her cheek. “He doesn’t get your artistic expression.” He glanced at Justin before looking back her way. “It can be a bitch on the nerves. I know.”
Justin elbowed him in the ribs. “Oh shove it, old man.” He continued on his way without glancing back and Brian grinned as he followed.
Al stood back, letting them pass and then sighed, shaking her head. “They are going to be a handful now.” Looking back at JR, she gave her a thumbs up and followed her fathers into the other room.
“You and Al are lucky, you know that?”
Gus shrugged. “Yeah. Well, sometimes, it’s not so easy or fun.”
JR shook her head. “But at least they listen, you know? Dad and Ben and Mama…they don’t want to hear what I have to say.”
“I don’t think that’s true, Jenny.” He rarely used her name in that form and it caught her attention like nothing else would. “They are your parents. They love you. Whatever they do or say…their only looking out for you.”
JR crossed her arms, walking a few steps to lean against the wall. “You don’t have that problem with the Dads”
Gus snorted. “Like hell we don’t. Look, Al and I screw up like every other kid in the world. And we get punished. Like all kids do.”
JR looked doubtful. “You get punished?”
“Sweetheart, I have a hell of a record in this house. When I get in trouble, I go for broke.” Gus shrugged as he said it. Just a matter of fact. They had a good life but it was far from perfect. “Believe me, kid. We all got lucky with our parents.”
JR sighed. “You got luckier. Trust me.”
Gus wanted to argue but he wasn’t so sure she was wrong. “Look, Michael and Ben and Mama…they just think different, that’s all. They want what’s best for you.”
“I know. But-- Dad is driving me nuts! He’s such a clinger. Overbearing. Always wanting to help. God knows, I love Ben but he’s just too fucking Zen for me, man. Don’t laugh!”
Gus tried to stop, waving a hand at her. “I’m sorry but you sound like Dad.”
“See! And Mama…oh god. I’m going to kill her, Gus. She just can’t help it. Everything I say or do is wrong. Corrine is the only one who even remotely tries to listen.”
Gus went to his sister’s side, sliding one hand over her shoulders and leaning his head on top of hers. “It’s just a phase, Jenny. It’ll pass. They’ll grow out of it.”
She laughed at that, smacking his chest with one very scary manicured hand -- with claws for nails. “I want to trade until they do.”
Gus shook his head. “Oh hell no. I already went through that phase with Dad and DJ. Nope. Sorry. I get to keep them now.” He shook her slightly and she looked up at him. “I wouldn’t trade my parents for the world. Neither would you.”
JR made a face. “I fucking hate it when you’re right.”
Gus grinned. “Dude, I’m always right.”
“I always hate it.”
There was the sound of something shattering and moments later, Al running through the door, skidding to a halt. “You haven’t seen me. I wasn’t here.” She disappeared up the stairs.
“Alexandra Mackenzie!”
Justin’s voice rang out and JR blinked. That had sounded just like…
Gus glanced at JR, one eyebrow raising. “What did I say?”
She smiled, dimples showing. “Oh shut up.”

Date: 2008-06-02 08:41 pm (UTC)JR is so cool, and exactly how I thought she would turn out. It makes me giggle just to think about Ben trying to rationally explain to Michael that JR is just going through a teenager rebellion phase or something like that, being all understanding and stuff. lol
Hehehe, Mel with her "wild" past, JR has certainly inherited that streak, if the Mom wants to admit it or not.
And Gus being all older brother, it is so freaking adorable. And I think I awwwwwed quite a lot when he talked about how the parents just look out for the children's good, everyone of them in their own way, but all because they love their kids.
Thanks again for this gem. Couldn't have asked for more. *hugs*

Date: 2008-06-02 10:18 am (UTC)Silly Mikey. How can he, I'm sure, raise her on comic books, and not expect her to turn out colorful?
“You haven’t seen me. I wasn’t here.”
Al is the coolest ;) And I appreciate BJ's cameo!

Date: 2008-06-15 08:27 pm (UTC)Hmmm, I'm pretty noob with this whole LJ thingy (even after three years) so any tips on how I could
stalkkeep on eye on this universe and/or for any other fics you might dish out? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.Oh! I haven't read other comments on the universe 'cept this one's, so I don't know if this has been asked and answered before, but who is Al's mother? Mackenzie sort of might possibly kind of vaguely ring a bell, but ... I draw blank.
I love this universe even though this is the first one I'm actually commenting. I don't usually leave comments in LJ but I'll try to rectify that in the future. Great fic!
Luv, reb
