Always Yes

“Remind me again whose brilliant idea this was?”

Luke grinned over at Noah, balancing Ethan on his hip - who was getting pretty heavy to carry that way - as Noah watched Faith and Natalie crashing into each other with their bumper cars. They laughed and waved at him.

“Ah. That would be you, Mr. ‘Oh, no, Mrs. Snyder. They won’t be any trouble. Luke and I would love to take them to the fair,’” Luke lowered his voice to mimic Noah. It was actually scarily accurate.

“Shut up.” Noah swatted Luke’s ass, his hand lingering for a moment before sliding away slowly. He winked at Luke when his breath caught in his throat. “Anyway, you were moping. I thought this would help.”

“I was not moping.”

Noah raised one eyebrow, biting his lip to keep from grinning and just stared at Luke.

“Okay, maybe a little.”

“Maybe a lot.”

Ethan chose that moment to pat his brother on the face, sticky hands grasping to get Luke’s attention. “Luke!”

“What’s up, buddy?”

He pointed at the carousel and Luke stifled a groan, sighing, and looked at Noah for help. This would be the fifth time Ethan wanted to ride the horses and as much as Luke loved his brother, it was just a bit too much.

His boyfriend rolled his eyes just a little and reached for Ethan. Luke watched Noah’s face light up completely when Ethan launched into his arms. Tickling Ethan‘s belly, Noah asked, “Hey, kiddo. You want to go with me?”

Ethan grinned at Noah’s face, placing his hands on Noah’s cheek and nodding quickly. “Wanna go!”

Faith and Natalie bounded up, hands full with cotton candy and fresh-squeezed lemonade, catching the end of the conversation. “We’re not leaving, are we?” Natalie asked, making a face that was so much like Luke’s, Noah actually let out a laugh, cutting it short when Luke glared at him.

“Ethan and I were going to ride the ponies.”

“Oh! I want to ride them!” Natalie bounced in place, taking Noah’s free hand and looking up at him, huge hearts practically visible in her eyes. “I get to sit with Noah.”

Faith rolled her eyes, grabbing her sister and pulling her over to where she stood. “Noah should sit with Luke. I’ll take Ethan.”

She was getting so tall, it was scaring the crap out of him.

Luke shook his head, putting his hands up quickly. “No! I love you guys but I can’t ride that thing anymore.”

“Well, then, Noah will have Ethan and Nat next to me.” Faith handed Luke her small digital camera. “You take the pictures, Luke. Please, “ she added when she realized how bossy she sounded.

He kissed her forehead, shooing them away towards the ride. “Go on.”

Noah let the girls go ahead of them, stopping in front of Luke and leaning in to drop two soft kisses on Luke’s mouth. His breath whispered on Luke’s lips, asking, “You sure you don’t want to come with us, cowboy?”

Luke smiled, touching Noah’s face gently, shaking his head. “You go riding, army brat. At least we know this is one horse you can’t fall off of.” He laughed at Noah’s indignant expression and winked at Ethan. “You make sure he stays upright on that saddle, alright, buddy?”

Ethan gave Luke a thumbs up. “You got it.”

Noah groaned, adjusting Ethan’s weight, walking towards the ride, and muttering a quiet, “Guy falls off a horse one time…he never lives it down.”

“Not if the horse was a mare named Daisy he doesn’t.”

Noah ignored him but Luke could see the ghost of a smile on his face as he walked towards the carousel to meet his sisters, who had scored four horses all grouped together. Luke watched them from where he stood, his heart bursting with so much emotion as he watched Noah help Ethan onto his horse, laughing with him, encouraging and protecting. It made him wish for things he knew better than to want.

Faith waved at him and Luke remembered the camera in his hands, running to the edge of the fence as the music started and the carousel began to move. He watched his brother jump up and down, making Noah laugh with what Luke assumed were his horse noises. Ethan liked making sound effects. He snapped picture after picture, his eyes always falling on Noah’s face after a minute or two.

He looked so happy. So at home with his brother and sisters.

That same ache that had bothered him for days came back and he shook it away as best he could.

When Noah glanced at him as he went by, Luke hoped his smile didn’t look as forced as it felt.

“Hey, everything okay?”

Noah’s arms wrapped around him, and Luke instinctively leaned back, seeking the warmth and comfort he always found in them. He shook his head, not answering the question directly. “Where are the kids?”

Noah seemed to contemplate whether to push for an answer to his question, but after a moment, he leaned his chin on Luke’s shoulder and pointed toward the carnival’s version of teacups. “They’re spinning around over there.”

Luke glanced at where Noah pointed, nodded and turning in his boyfriend’s arms, he let loose a sigh, not quite meeting Noah’s eyes when he spoke. “If I asked you to marry me, right now, what would you say?”

He looked up under his eyelashes.

Noah blinked in surprise, mouth opening before shutting again quickly.

Luke swallowed his heart, finding blue eyes watching him closely. It had stopped being a joke in Luke’s mind a long time ago and every time he asked, it hurt to know Noah didn’t believe him.

“If I asked - here in the middle of this crowded land of games and rides - you to marry me, what would you say?”

Noah’s eyes widened, head tilting to one side as he studied Luke’s face. “As long as you don’t mean immediately this instant ‘cause I think it might take me a while to find a minister willing to do it in the carnival, I’d say yes.”

Luke stepped back, mouth hanging open. “Yes?”

Noah seemed cautious, taking in Luke’s response. But they’d been through so much and somehow come out on the other side still wanting each other, loving each other, that the answer seemed pretty easy.

“Yes. If you asked me, I’d marry you.”

Luke placed his hands on his hips, shaking his head and then turned back around, heading toward his siblings, leaving Noah confused in the wake of his angry departure.

After a long moment, Noah called after him.

“So…. I take it I shouldn’t hold my breath for the ring?”

~~~
Noah leaned against the frame, arms crossed, that ball of confusion and anger getting bigger in his chest as he watched Luke’s jerky, short motions.
Luke rattled a plate into the dish rack, red hands appearing and disappearing from the soapy depths of the sink. His back was lined with tension and the profile that Noah could make out showed his clenched jaw.
“Why did you ask - I mean - if the answer wasn’t one you were prepared for or wanted - why?”
Luke dropped his head forward, staring into the water when he answered. “Because I’ve been asking that question for months, Noah. I asked over dinner at the best restaurant in town and you never answered. I asked spontaneously in front of half the family and you laughed it off as a joke. I asked right after -”
“No you haven’t.”
Luke whirled around, glaring at Noah, hands waving around, dispensing water and bubbles all over.
“I have asked! For months now, I’ve asked. And every time you said no, something inside me died. And now - in the middle of a babysitting date with the kids - you make it sound like it‘s the most logical, wonderful, perfect idea. When you always said no.”
Noah walked into the room, stopping at the edge of the island and placed his hands against the old grainy wood for support. “You never asked. After I could see again, you laid it out why we should become partners, the reasons it was logical for us. You never asked. Because you were scared about what happened with Reid.”
Luke flinched some at the mention of the name. It had taken them a long time to recover from the wounds of all of that. Luke opened his mouth to apologize but closed it when Noah shook his head, cutting a hand through the air.
“Stop that shit.”
Luke blinked, the red heat of anger staining Noah’s cheeks, as he curled his hands into fists, biting them into the counter.
Noah wasn’t finished yet.
“You don’t regret Reid. You shouldn’t have to. “
“Noah.”
“What? I drove you straight to him, Luke. It was inevitable. So, just stop - just stop.” Noah looked right at Luke. “It’s been done a while now, babe. We had the fights and the angry words and the not speaking for too long part. Then, we had the obvious realization, we can’t make it without each other. You love me. I’m more than convinced of that. I hope to God you know that I love you and it’s actually sunk through. Enough with the punishing yourself every chance you get.
Please.”
Luke took a deep breath, exhaling slowly, nodding as he did. Noah seemed to visibly relax.
“The second time you asked we were at dinner with the whole family and it was more to get them to stop asking when it would happen than the fact that you really wanted to marry me.”
Luke grimaced at the memory and the almost careless way he’d asked. He remembered the flash of hurt in Noah’s eyes before he’d recovered, grinning at him and turning him down with a “Maybe some other time, baby.”
Then, Noah leaned forward, elbows on the table, eyes on the fingers he was playing with. He always fidgeted when he was upset. “And last week -” Luke watched him close his eyes before speaking. “When you asked - and it was straight out of an old time movie, Luke. It was. Not to sound like a girl or anything but it was everything I thought it should be. I could hardly breathe and all I wanted was to tell you that I loved you and of course, I wanted to marry you -”
Luke breathed out.
“Reid and Michael walked in.”
Noah nodded slowly, shrugging his shoulders as he met Luke’s eyes. “Your reaction -”
“Was ridiculous and immature and -” Luke ran a hand through his hair, inching closer.
“Realistic.” Noah stepped closer, taking his hands in his, interweaving their fingers. “You cared about him. I know that. Hell, I pretty much made sure you did.”
“I never loved him like that. I mean, I could have but I -”
“Pesky Noah Mayer got in the way.”
Luke felt the laughter bubble up in his chest, shooting out from his mouth. “Stupid, gorgeous, stubborn, irritating geek owns my heart. Not much anyone could do against that.”
Noah rolled his eyes, moved closer when Luke gripped his shirt and pulled. “He can relate.”
“I know we’ve talked about this but -”
“Luke. I’m a pretty calm guy, as you know. Well, except for that one patch where I let loose every bit of anger I’d ever felt all over the place like word vomit.”
Luke caressed Noah’s head, smiled and shrugged gently. “Yeah, well, you had your reasons.”
“I’m not so sure but -” Noah sighed, leaning into Luke’s hand when it trailed down his face. “When you got so mad about Reid and Michael, that calm guy took a vacation for like two seconds and all I wanted to do was punch the hell out of that motherfucker because you still cared. Only thing that saved him was the fact that he was the reason I actually, you know, had the capability to see where I would be hitting.”
Luke knew his eyes were wide and mouth gaped just a little. He let out a laugh, covering his mouth. “Oh, baby. Is that why -” He pulled Noah’s face closer, gripping the sides of his head gently. “I could give two shits that Reed was there with Michael. Hell, I’m, happy for them.”
Noah blinked a few times, smiling slowly.
“What pissed me off was that he interrupted me asking the love of my damn life to make an honest man out of me. Do you know that I’d been trying to ask you for weeks before that? Weeks! But something always came up.”
“And it wasn’t that I didn’t want to say yes. I just thought - that the whole thing with you yelling at Reed - you weren’t sure. That - you weren’t ready.”
“So you wanted to say yes?”
“Of course I did!” Noah threw his hands up in the air and Luke hid his smile. His family was rubbing off on his guy. “But then we went home, and you wouldn’t talk about it so I assumed…”
“I didn’t want to talk about it because you never said yes! So I didn’t want to deal with the rejection. Again.”
They stared at each other and then Noah’s mouth starting twitching, giggles escaping before he could hold them back. “Is that why you’ve been in a mood? Cause you thought…?”
“We’re so stupid.”
“We really, really are.”
Noah’s arms rounded Luke’s waist, hands meeting at the small of his back. “I think we could win an award for how dumb we can be.”
Luke rubbed his forehead against Noah’s chin, fitting his body flush on Noah’s, sighing into the warm flesh at his lips. “Can I ask you why you said yes at the fair?”
Noah kissed Luke’s hair, sliding hands underneath clothes and across slightly shivering skin. “Because it felt honest. It was you and me. About us. We were surrounded by strangers. The day had been about family. The kind I want to build with you.”
Tear pricked at Luke’s eyes and he grinned against Noah’s chest. “I thought I wouldn’t get a chance to do that with you.” He placed a small kiss on Noah’s neck.
Noah laughed softly. “Babe, I’ve got names picked out, okay?”
Luke pulled back. “You do not!”
“You have met me, right?”
Luke grinned up, lips pressing in once, twice. “So, it's yes?”
Noah leaned in closer, soft kisses growing into longer ones. He licked his way inside Luke, gripping back and arms. He only moved back an inch or two, so close that all Luke could see was a blur of blue and skin.
“So, it’s always been a yes.”
End.
