bluejeanbaby01. Also for Van/Jake fanfic 100 prompt 044. Circle. So this. Yeah. Ficlet - or maybe more like extending drabble - whatever. No clue where it came from. Totally out of nowhere. Feedback awesome. Also: Stop goggling yourselves, boys!
Circumference
cir.cum.fer.ence [ser-kuhm-fer-uhns]
1. the outer boundary, esp. of a circular area; perimeter: the circumference of a circle.
2. the length of such a boundary: a one mile circumference.
3. the area within a bounding line: the vast circumference of his mind.
He hadn’t noticed when it first happened.
In all honesty, Van never did.
It wasn’t so much that he wasn’t aware of the people around him or what was happening to them as it was that he never took that extra step to find out the whys. He figured if they wanted him to know, if they had something to say to him, they would. He respected their privacy…for the most part.
So when the first picture showed up on one of the sites he checked out frequently, he’d stared at the little circle of rubber around Jake’s wrist. He didn’t give it much thought - except for a passing one.
He didn’t think about how his heart lifted at seeing it, either.
Jake always picked up Van’s habits. It was what happened when you were so close. Best friends. One of his soul mates. His partner in crime.
When the second picture was in a magazine - the question of what the rubber band symbolized asked once more- Van pushed away his annoyance. He’d already explained what they meant to him. He had no idea what they were to Jake.
He was curious, though. But Jake hadn’t even mentioned it so he didn’t.
It wasn't until the day Jake wore it on set during a scene that Van broke down and asked.
Jake blinked at him and then down at his wrist. “I don’t know. I guess it just reminds me of you.”
Van held very still. “And you - like that?” He had been expecting some sort of symbol of unity about the Emmy’s - that was so a Jake thing to do. This was…different.
Jake grinned. “Well, I don’t have a problem thinking about you, dork. But - no - it’s more what you always say - if you look for something hard enough, you’ll find it.”
“And you were looking for…?”
“You.”
“Oh.”
Jake smiled wide, then turned and walked back to the set.
Van glanced down at his own wrist, binding circle tight on his skin.
Yeah.
He got that.
